Air China is a relatively young airline having been originally founded in 1988.  Air China Limited was established as a joint stock limited company in Beijing, on 30 September 2004. The Company shares are listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

Air China is the only national flag carrier of China and a member of the Star Alliance, the worlds largest airline alliance and official airline partner of the Beijing Olympics in 2008. For seven consecutive years from 2007 to 2014, Air China was listed among the "top 500 global brands”, becoming the only Civil Aviation airline ever listed.   By the end of 2014, the Air China "PhoenixMiles" program had more than 3296 million members.
